As September comes to an end, CRIO would like to acknowledge the importance of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, which is dedicated to honoring the brave children and their families affected by cancer. In the United States alone, there are more than 290 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer every week. Because of medical advancements made through clinical research, such as trials led by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, we are encouraged to see the overall childhood cancer survival rate go from 20% to 80% since 1962. It is crucial we not only continue to improve these breakthrough treatments at home, but also share them globally, where a total of 400,000 children and adolescents develop cancer annually.
This month, as well as throughout the year, we work to come together to find a cure for cancer, while supporting those currently undergoing diagnosis and treatment. Donations of any kind to a Children’s Hospital in your community will go a long way, but you can also attend functions to raise awareness and reach out to your government leaders to let them know the critical need for research funding. Raising our voices collectively to stand up for those too young to fight for themselves is essential as we fight against childhood cancer. We will not rest until children everywhere are given the chance to grow up healthy and reach their full potential.
