Central eSource played a key role in streamlining site startup, data collection and monitoring
BOSTON, Oct. 27, 2026 – CRIO, the leading provider of eSource technology for clinical research, received an SCDM Innovation Award with Eli Lilly and Company in the Clinical Data Science Implementation Excellence category at the SCDM 2026 Annual Conference. The awards program recognizes organizations that excel at integrating clinical data science through people, processes and technology.
CRIO and Lilly were recognized for their collaboration on a global Phase 3 Alzheimer’s disease prevention trial spanning more than 120 sites in five countries and enrolling more than 2,000 patients. CRIO deployed its Central eSource platform for the pilot.
The traditional approach to source data collection would have required each of the trial’s sites to independently translate a complex protocol into its own source templates, using a mix of paper documents, disconnected eSource systems and electronic health records. That model delays study startup and produces significant variability in how data is collected across sites.
CRIO instead deployed a single, sponsor-driven electronic source template to participating sites at study activation. Sites could configure the template within Lilly-defined parameters, preserving site autonomy while ensuring consistency across the global study.
Key outcomes included:
- 70% site adoption: Sites across the global trial opted in voluntarily.
- 59% reduction in on-site monitoring visits: Central eSource enabled clinical research associates to monitor remotely, reducing travel requirements and associated costs.
- 30% lower cost per monitoring visit: The shift to remote monitoring lowered monitoring costs.
- 30-day faster site startup: Sites received protocol-driven source documents immediately upon activation.
- 24% improvement in monitoring effectiveness: Centralized data and real-time edit checks allowed monitors to review more patient visits per day.
Lilly has already begun expanding Central eSource to additional studies beyond the original pilot. CRIO is building on lessons from this deployment in several ways: incorporating experienced sites into core template development to reduce site-level configuration work, advancing the EDC integration so future studies launch with it active from day one – eliminating SDV for integrated data points, reducing transcription errors, and expanding multilingual support to broaden the model’s geographic reach.
“This pilot was one of the most ambitious central eSource deployments in the industry to date, and we’re honored to share this recognition with Lilly,” said Jonathan Andrus, co-CEO, CRIO. “Seventy percent of sites chose to opt in. That tells us the model works for the people doing the research, not just the sponsor, and it’s a strong signal that standardized source data is ready to transform clinical research on a global scale.”
Andrus was also recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from SCDM. A member of the organization for nearly thirty years, he has served on the board for over 20 years, during which he has served as chair twice and currently serves as SCDM treasurer.
